Carol's Change

I read two recaps of The Walking Dead episode "The Same Boat" and what stood out from both was Carol's reluctance to kill. Seems that the time jumps are hurting the show because viewers were left wondering why Carols change seems sudden.

The writers could have put in a scene/flashback where Carol and one of the Alexandrians who she has become friends with out on a supply run. The friend is bit by a walker and they both know what needs to be done. This is it for Carol, she has killed people that she's cared about over and over. There is only so much a person can deal with before breaking. Carol reluctantly does it, and this sends her into a deep depression.

I think the creative team behind WD are a little afraid of letting characters develop over the course of a season because of the backlash they got for season two at Hershel's farm.

There was a great comment posted by Cool_Breeze on io9 which I read later in the day that explains it well.
